Endurance Lessons for Lawyers: When Lawyering Is Like Everesting – Part Eight

| Blog

I started this series thinking I was training for a physical challenge. I wasn’t. I was learning how performance actually works.

In a few weeks, I’ll attempt Everesting—29,029 feet of vertical gain in a single effort. It takes up to 36 hours. You don’t complete something like that by pushing harder – You complete it by sustaining.

For most of my career, I believed performance meant intensity: Work harder. Push more.
That mindset works—until it doesn’t.

Endurance training forced me to confront a different model:
• Most of the work happens at low intensity
• Recovery is non-negotiable
• Consistency matters more than effort
• The middle is where discipline is tested
• Small gains compound
• Focus beats noise

And one idea sits underneath all of it: You’re not training for effort, you’re training for duration. That idea changed much for me. It changed how I approach a workout.
It changed how I approach a case. Not every moment is trial. Not every issue requires maximum intensity. Not every opportunity to push should be taken. Discipline is not about doing more. It’s about doing what matters—consistently, over time.

Training also forced me to face something else: There is no perfect plan.

Life doesn’t cooperate – Schedules shift. Energy fluctuates. You don’t execute perfectly. You manage the puzzle. You adjust. You adapt. You stay engaged. That’s what builds capacity.

The best lawyers don’t operate at maximum intensity all the time. They know where to apply effort. They build cases in the quiet work: Preparation. Analysis. Thinking. They conserve energy for where it matters. They stay sharp when others fade.

This isn’t about endurance events. It’s about how you show up over time.
Anyone can push for an hour, but very few can sustain performance over months, years, careers, or even a lifetime. That’s the difference.

You don’t summit Everest by sprinting. You don’t win complex cases that way either. You build the capacity to keep going. One step at a time.
