Dear Fellows,
Attorney Resilience Requires More Than Mere Toughness
The typical caricature of trial lawyers exaggerates mental and emotional toughness—enabling the grotesque perception that we can be impervious to courtroom losses and other professional struggles. Of course, contrary to these depictions, even trial lawyers are human beings. Losses sting. Trial practice raises a host of challenges which require more than grit to overcome. They require true resilience—that ineffable ability to respond to adversity proactively and resourcefully.
Why I Asked LCA Fellow Deborah Perry About Attorney Resilience
Deborah knows about resilience and its sources. Both as a shareholder at Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C., focused on complex commercial litigation, and as a firm chair of the Women’s Initiative Group, Deborah has successfully navigated her share of legal and professional challenges with both an incisive mind and an open heart—a rare combination. Her courage and willingness to share the lessons she learned on how to garner and even teach resilience make her unique.
Recently, Deborah graciously shared with me her views on the value of resilience for trial lawyers; its true nature (spoiler alert: resilience and toughness are not the same) and some of its sources. I encourage you to watch our conversation HERE.
Our next in-person meeting will be October 12-14, 2022
Steve and Dottie Henry, and the fabulous LCA team, have finalized plans for the 2022 LCA Fall Conference and Celebration of Fellows which will take place on October 12-14 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego. You can view the conference details and registration HERE.
In the meantime, if you will be in South Florida, please let Theresa and me show you some hospitality.
Very truly yours,
